Austria evacuates 27 nationals from Sudan

Austrian Foreign Minister Alexander Schallenberg announced Monday evacuation of 27 citizens from Sudan.

Speaking at a news conference before the EU Foreign Ministers’ Council meeting, Schallenberg said a number of Austrian people, including 10 children, have been evacuated to Jordan on a German plane during the ceasefire.

The first batch of the nationals was already transported from Jordan to Berlin, and landed here safely, he noted.

The evacuation process was preceded by close coordination among international and European partners, he said.

Schallenberg expressed his concern about the situation in Sudan, lauding German and French aid that contributed to evacuating half of Austrian citizens from Sudan over the past 24 hours.

He warned against a civil war in Sudan in light of the ongoing fighting in Sudan, referring that there are still about 30 Austrians in that country.

He affirmed that the Foreign Ministry is following up closely the developments to facilitate the evacuation of Austrians from Sudan safely.

Over the past days, Schallenberg had been in contact with his counterparts, including Saudi Arabia’s Foreign Minister.
