MEMORABLE ST. GEORGE’S PARK VISIT FOR IRISH SIDE SLIGO ROVERS

Sligo Rovers FC recently visited the home of England Football, St. George’s Park, for a pre-season training camp in preparation for their League of Ireland Premier Division campaign, which kicks off in February.

During their stay at the Staffordshire facility, Rovers utilised the high-performance gym, elite recovery facilities and world-class pitches; all whilst enjoying the comfort and proximity of the on-site Hilton Hotel.

Managed by John Russell, Rovers faced Wigan Athletic U21s during their St. George’s Park visit, drawing 1-1 against their counterparts from the north west of England on Monday 23 January. Sligo Rovers Chief Executive Officer, Colin Feehily, explained the purpose of the team’s visit: “We wanted to take the squad away for a few days during our pre-season schedule. Our season runs from February to November in Ireland, so January was the best time for us. It was important to have the players using the best facilities possible and St. George’s Park offered that.

“The hotel was very good, the food excellent and the staff nice, pleasant and helpful. The proximately to the training areas were also useful and it didn’t take long to get where we needed to.

“We were able to use the hydrotherapy facilities and also had the opportunity, if needed, to use the indoor 3G playing area. These options wouldn’t be available to us here at our own training ground. The facilities were top class. It would be hard to find better facilities anywhere.”

Feehily also confirmed that their pre-season camp was an experience they will be looking to repeat in the future: “Thank you to all the staff and people involved behind the scenes for helping us throughout our stay, it was a great experience and one we’d love to do again.”
