Abu Dhabi: Under the directives of H.H. Sheikh Hamdan bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Ruler's Representative in Al Dhafra Region and Chairman of the Environment Agency - Abu Dhabi (EAD), the emirate has marked significant achievements in marine monitoring and conservation, coinciding with World Oceans Day. This marks the sixth consecutive year of progress in conserving, protecting, and enhancing fisheries resources.
According to Emirates News Agency, EAD has achieved an increase in the Sustainable Fisheries Index, reaching 97.4 percent by the end of 2024, a substantial rise from just 8.9 percent in 2018. This accomplishment underscores Abu Dhabi's leadership in sustainable fisheries management and its commitment to balancing economic growth with environmental sustainability.
H.H. Sheikh Hamdan bin Zayed Al Nahyan emphasized that the achievement reflects the diligent efforts of EAD to protect natural wealth and optimize sustainable marine resource stewardship. The initiative serves as a model for addressing environmental challenges and aims for a prosperous and resilient future.
Dr. Shaikha Salem Al Dhaheri, Secretary-General of EAD, highlighted the importance of deploying best-in-class management practices and leveraging scientific capabilities to restore fish populations and protect marine ecosystems. The significant progress in the Sustainable Fisheries Index reaffirms the role of evidence-based policy and global best practices in conserving natural heritage.
EAD's recent monitoring efforts have yielded notable findings, including the landing of 55 nuaimi fish, a species rarely sighted in recent years, and the first recorded presence of the white-spotted grouper in Abu Dhabi, now registered on the international Fish Base database. Additional sightings of rare species such as the large-scaled triggerfish and the spotted oceanic triggerfish indicate healthier marine ecosystems.
To support fish stock recovery, EAD has implemented a series of internationally aligned policies, regulating commercial fishing through sustainable methods and introducing new regulations for recreational fishing. The agency has also established six marine reserves within the Sheikh Zayed Protected Areas Network, enhanced sustainable aquaculture, and fish stocks through coral culture and artificial reefs under the Abu Dhabi Coral Gardens initiative.
