GCC Countries Enhance Water Resource Sustainability by Reducing Groundwater Extraction

Abu dhabi: GCC countries have taken significant steps to enhance the sustainability of their water resources by reducing reliance on groundwater and increasing the use of renewable water sources. Data issued by the Statistical Centre for the Cooperation Council for the Arab Countries of the Gulf (GCC-Stat) indicate a 3 percent decline in the annual rate of groundwater extraction over the past nine years. Additionally, the share of renewable water resources is projected to reach 25.5 percent in 2024.

According to Emirates News Agency, this shift underscores the GCC's commitment to sustainable water management policies. The countries are actively implementing strategic measures to ensure water security for future generations. These measures include reducing dependence on groundwater and increasing the contribution of renewable water resources within the overall water resource system.

The Statistical Centre emphasized that this transformation is part of broader GCC efforts to tackle water scarcity and climate change challenges. Key initiatives include expanding desalination projects, reusing treated water, and adopting modern technologies to enhance the efficiency of water resource utilization and promote rational consumption.

The growing contribution of renewable water resources in the GCC's water mix highlights a strategic move towards diversifying water sources. This approach aims to alleviate pressure on groundwater reserves, thereby supporting sustainable development plans and reinforcing water security across the region in the future.
