Irthi Showcases Emirati Crafts at Doha Biennial 2026 with Design Labs II

Doha:Irthi Contemporary Crafts Council is marking its second participation in the Design Doha Biennial 2026 with "Design Labs II," a curated project under the patronage of H.H. Sheikha Jawaher bint Mohammed Al Qasimi. This initiative aims to present a contemporary interpretation of traditional crafts through a blend of research, experimentation, and collaboration between local craftswomen and global designers.

According to Wam, the exhibition will be hosted at Fereej Al Asmakh in Doha from 5 to 7 November 2026, with displays continuing until 31 January 2027. Five collections from the programme will debut, highlighting the integration of artisanal skills and contemporary techniques in furniture, art installations, and architectural design.

Reem BinKaram, Director General of Irthi Contemporary Crafts Council, emphasized that this participation builds on Irthi's efforts to elevate Emirati crafts on international platforms. She noted that the project fosters new opportunities for craftswomen to contribute to contemporary works, ensuring the continuity of traditional crafts for future generations.

Launched in 2024, Design Labs II is a research-led programme that explores the relationship between traditional craft knowledge and modern design. The project draws from research documented in the Council's publication, "Architectural Elements from Cultural Heritage," and involves artisans, designers, and researchers to develop ideas rooted in traditional practices.

The exhibition features ten design collections, including "Hod and Hida" by Paola Sakr and "Nwah" by Mhairi Boyle, among others. These works celebrate traditional materials and craft techniques in new contexts, showcasing the potential of local crafts in contemporary design.

The Council will also host panel discussions and workshops alongside the exhibition to explore the relationship between craft and design. A key panel will discuss the role of women in preserving traditional crafts, featuring speakers such as H.E. Reem BinKaram and other cultural leaders.

Design Labs II is pivotal in Irthi's research efforts, contributing to the establishment of the first art collection of the Irthi Museum, set to open in 2029. This initiative aims to document craft knowledge and develop new applications for traditional techniques, maintaining a connection between inherited practices and contemporary cultural production.
