OpenAI Unveils ChatGPT for Teens with Enhanced Safety Features

San francisco: US company OpenAI has announced the launch of a specialised version of its popular app-dubbed "ChatGPT for Teens"-amid growing concerns among researchers and parents regarding teenagers' emotional reliance on chatbots. This new version aims to foster learning, critical thinking, and AI usage with confidence, while incorporating enhanced safety features and additional parental controls.

According to Emirates News Agency, OpenAI has designed ChatGPT for Teens to provide robust safety protections and promote healthy use. The system automatically assigns users aged 13 to 17 to this version, ensuring age-appropriate interaction. The initiative seeks to expand educational opportunities by supporting teens outside the traditional classroom environment, providing guidance when direct help is unavailable.

A key feature of ChatGPT for Teens is its ability to assist students in studying for tests by explaining concepts, guiding problem-solving, and checking comprehension. The app's Study Mode offers step-by-step support, encouraging teens to understand material thoroughly. Responsible Homework Reminders are integrated to detect attempts at shortcuts and redirect users to collaborative problem-solving sessions.

Additional features include Quizzes and Learning Visualizations, which provide varied methods for practice and concept clarity. The app also includes Study Hours, allowing teens or parents to schedule default Study Mode times, promoting consistent and effective study habits. OpenAI emphasizes that AI, with proper guardrails, can fill educational gaps, offering individualized support to students striving for academic success.
