UAE Delegation Explores Space Collaboration in Japan


Tokyo: A delegation from the UAE Space Agency, led by Dr Ahmad Belhoul Al Falasi, Minister of Sports and Chairman of the UAE Space Agency, undertook an official visit to Japan as part of the UAE’s efforts to strengthen international cooperation in space exploration, scientific research, and advanced space industries.



According to Emirates News Agency, Dr Al Falasi emphasized the UAE’s clear and ambitious vision for the future of the space sector, guided by the National Space Strategy 2030. This strategy aims to build a sustainable space economy, support scientific research, and empower the private sector to engage actively in space projects and technologies. He highlighted the UAE Space Agency’s commitment to working closely with global partners to foster a supportive space ecosystem, ensuring sustainable growth.



Dr Al Falasi stated that the visit to Japan underscores the UAE’s commitment to international collaboration, aiming to connect national aspirations with cross-border initiatives. The partnerships with Japanese counterparts are seen as pivotal in creating a more integrated global space ecosystem. This collaboration aligns with the UAE’s position in space science and economy, both regionally and globally.



Salem Butti Al Qubaisi, Director-General of the UAE Space Agency, highlighted the visit as a significant milestone in the UAE’s relationship with Japan, a leading space nation. The visit reinforced the strategic partnership between the two countries and explored advanced developments in space industries. Discussions on joint projects aimed at enhancing national capabilities and creating new opportunities for youth were also held.



Al Qubaisi expressed optimism about the cooperation marking a new phase of scientific and industrial partnerships, benefiting both regions and driving progress in the global space community. The delegation met with senior officials from Japan’s Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry, led by MATSUO Takehiko, Vice Minister for International Affairs. Discussions focused on collaboration opportunities in space sector industries and innovation in space exploration technologies.



The delegation also toured the JAXA Tsukuba Space Centre, where Dr Hiroshi Yamakawa, President of the Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency (JAXA), presented Japan’s scientific and technical initiatives, including advanced space sensing systems, satellite laboratories, and deep space exploration programs. Additionally, the delegation visited the Tobeshima plant of Mitsubishi Heavy Industries (MHI), a key center for spacecraft and satellite manufacturing in Japan.



During discussions with Iwao Igarashi, Head of Space at MHI, Dr Al Falasi focused on enhancing collaboration in space manufacturing, knowledge transfer, and capacity building, aiming to strengthen industrial cooperation between the two nations.
