UAE Hosts International Dialogue on AI’s Role in Humanitarian Actions

Abu dhabi: Under the patronage of H.H. Sheikh Theyab bin Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Deputy Chairman of the Presidential Court for Development and Fallen Heroes Affairs, the Office of Development Affairs at the Presidential Court has announced a dialogue on strengthening anticipatory humanitarian action. The session will be held on Tuesday at the Zayed National Museum in Abu Dhabi, with international experts in humanitarian affairs and artificial intelligence participating.

According to Emirates News Agency, the session is part of an initiative aimed at exploring ways to bridge the gap between predicting humanitarian crises and executing early actions. By examining predictive analytics and artificial intelligence, the dialogue seeks to enhance the readiness of the global humanitarian system.

Discussions will center on how predictive technologies and AI can support anticipatory humanitarian action, improving actors' ability to move from risk forecasting to timely intervention. The session is aligned with a feasibility study by the Office of Development Affairs on developing anticipatory humanitarian action capabilities. It aims to establish a shared understanding of current gaps, identify the UAE's potential role, provide strategic inputs for the feasibility study, and lay the groundwork for continued collaboration.

Dr. Tareq Al Ameri, Director of the Office of Development Affairs, noted the pressure on the global humanitarian system due to budget constraints and declining donor contributions. He highlighted that advances in technology, especially AI, offer new tools for predicting disasters and risks.

The dialogue reflects the UAE's efforts to identify gaps in global capacity to anticipate crises, develop solutions, and consolidate its role in global humanitarian support. The session aims to discuss strategic, technical, operational, and governance aspects of crisis forecasting capabilities and determine their practical value.

Dr. Al Ameri emphasized that the session is expected to contribute to progress within the humanitarian aid ecosystem by supporting effective resource allocation, reducing costs, raising preparedness levels, guiding precise interventions, and strengthening partnerships.

The session is anticipated to produce outputs, including key insights and recommendations for the feasibility study, and a white paper on the strategic case and potential impact of forecasting capabilities in humanitarian action, based on the discussions among experts and participants.

The session organization reflects the UAE's development and humanitarian legacy, dating to the late Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan, who established a humanitarian ethos of generosity and service to humanity. Under the leadership of President His Highness Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, the UAE continues this legacy through initiatives combining humanitarian values, global collaborations, and modern technology for effective crisis interventions.
