Abu Dhabi:The UAE national jiu-jitsu team has showcased exceptional technical performance, discipline, and professionalism at the 20th Asian Games Aichi-Nagoya 2026, affirming the country's status as a global jiu-jitsu hub, according to Panagiotis Theodoropoulos, President of the Ju-Jitsu International Federation (JJIF).
According to Emirates News Agency, Theodoropoulos attributed the UAE's success to long-term strategic planning, emphasizing the team's recent achievements as a reflection of the country's vision for developing athletes and the sporting ecosystem. He congratulated the national team for their commendable performance.
The inclusion of jiu-jitsu in the Asian Games by the Olympic Council of Asia has been described by Theodoropoulos as a significant milestone, boosting technical standards and competition, and fortifying the sport's prominence in Asia. He noted Asia's pivotal role in driving jiu-jitsu's global development, with substantial contributions from the UAE.
Theodoropoulos commended Abu Dhabi for its comprehensive approach to fostering jiu-jitsu, which includes initiatives across schools, educational institutions, and various organizations, enhancing participation and nurturing new generations of athletes. He also recognized the efforts of Abdulmunam Al Hashemi in promoting the sport across Asia.
Since Al Hashemi's leadership began in 2014, the number of member national federations has surged from 12 to over 40, alongside increased competitions and participation. New programs for juniors, youth, women, and officials have been introduced to further develop the sport.
Theodoropoulos praised the efficient and fair organization of the jiu-jitsu competitions at the Asian Games Aichi-Nagoya 2026, suggesting the standards could serve as a benchmark for future events. He noted the potential for jiu-jitsu's inclusion in multi-sport events on other continents, highlighting Asia's unique model of support and coordination.
The Ju-Jitsu International Federation plans to continue collaboration with Asian and other continental federations to enhance administrative, technical, and refereeing capacities, broaden education and training programs, and launch further initiatives to expand global participation and elevate technical standards.
