Abu dhabi: The international community marked the World Day to Combat Desertification and Drought, observed annually on June 17 to promote public awareness of international efforts to combat desertification and land degradation. In 2026, the focus of Desertification and Drought Day was to bring global attention to rangelands, emphasizing their importance under the theme 'Rangelands: Recognize. Respect. Restore.' This observance highlighted the economic, ecological, and cultural value of rangelands and called for investment in restoring degraded areas.
According to Emirates News Agency, this year's event aligns with the International Year of Rangelands and Pastoralists and seeks to raise awareness, encourage responsible investment, and strengthen policies that protect rangelands and the livelihoods of pastoralists. Rangelands, covering more than half of the Earth's land surface, support the lives of approximately two billion people worldwide and provide almost 70% of livestock feed globally, making them essential to food systems. However, up to half of the world's rangelands are degraded or at risk.
In his message on the observance, UN Secretary-General Ant³nio Guterres stated, "On this World Day to Combat Desertification and Drought, we are issuing an urgent call to recognize and respect the world's rangelands. This means investing in restoration, especially water security; empowering rural communities through sustainable employment; and forging solutions across borders through international cooperation." He urged for global efforts to protect the land to ensure that rangelands thrive for future generations.
Rangelands are crucial as wildlife habitats and carbon sinks, yet are facing significant threats. The degradation of these lands poses risks to the global food system, local livelihoods, and biodiversity, while also contributing to increased greenhouse gas emissions.
