WIPO Launches AI Infrastructure Interchange

Geneva: The World Intellectual Property Organisation (WIPO) has launched the Artificial Intelligence Infrastructure Interchange (AIII), a new initiative aimed at expert dialogue on intellectual property (IP) and artificial intelligence (AI) issues. This effort will concentrate on technical and operational matters, complementing ongoing discussions in other WIPO forums.

According to Emirates News Agency, over 1,700 participants, including government ministers, industry leaders in AI and IP, and other stakeholders, registered to attend the launch event held at WIPO headquarters in Geneva, Switzerland. In his opening address, WIPO Director General Daren Tang highlighted AI's potential to transform innovation and creativity, posing challenges for the global IP ecosystem while also presenting opportunities to identify and seize.

Tang noted the historical context of technology evolution, drawing parallels with the transformative impact of interoperable railway networks and music streaming infrastructure. He emphasized the importance of building robust infrastructure networks to harness AI's potential, supporting and empowering human innovators and creators.

The discussions, involving creators, rights-holders, developers, technical experts, and others, will cover issues such as facilitating access to data at scale, identification and attribution standards, watermarking, fingerprinting, rights management, and the use of AI in IP enforcement and infrastructure.

To facilitate the technical-level discussions anticipated for AIII, a Technical Exchange Network has been formed, comprising over 90 experts from various countries, including technology firms, AI developers, rightsholders, individual creators, academia, and civil society. This global network will initially focus on mapping existing copyright infrastructure and the technical challenges and opportunities at the intersection of AI and the creative economy. The mapping exercise's results will identify targeted areas for further work.
