ADIO, GCAA, and Abu Dhabi Mobility Unite to Propel Advanced Air Mobility Solutions

Abu dhabi: The Abu Dhabi Investment Office (ADIO), the General Civil Aviation Authority (GCAA), and the Integrated Transport Centre (Abu Dhabi Mobility) have entered into a cooperation agreement aimed at enhancing the design, manufacturing, and deployment of advanced air mobility solutions. This agreement was formalized under the supervision of the Smart and Autonomous Systems Council, with Sheikh Hamdan bin Saeed bin Tahnoon Al Nahyan in attendance.

According to Emirates News Agency, the agreement is set to drive innovation within the sector, focusing on aligning design certification efforts and optimizing the efficiency of smart aviation systems. Moreover, it seeks to develop regulatory frameworks for sustainable air transport solutions. This initiative aligns with the objectives of the Smart and Autonomous Systems Council to shape the future of smart mobility in Abu Dhabi, advancing autonomous transportation systems across land, sea, and air.

Under this agreement, ADIO, GCAA, and Abu Dhabi Mobility will collaborate to develop State of Design and State of Manufacture documentation. They will also outline specifications to guide and support the certification and regulation of emerging advanced aircraft technologies, which include electric vertical take-off and landing (eVTOL) and electric conventional take-off and landing (eCTOL) systems.

Al Ain Region is poised to become a global hub for design and regulatory activities in this sector. The development of supporting infrastructure, technical expertise, and international partnerships is planned to ensure safe and sustainable operations. The program's design and implementation will be tailored to align with international standards and best practices.

Saif Mohammed Al Suwaidi, Director-General of the GCAA, emphasized that the UAE's long-standing leadership in aviation regulation and safety will be bolstered through this collaboration. He stated that the initiative would take meaningful steps towards developing capabilities associated with a State of Design, reinforcing readiness to guide and certify the next generation of advanced aircraft technologies. The commitment remains to ensure that regulatory frameworks set benchmarks for excellence and innovation worldwide.

Badr Al-Olama, Director-General of ADIO, highlighted the significance of advanced air mobility as a defining frontier for sustainable innovation. He noted that Abu Dhabi is uniquely positioned to lead in this field by building capabilities for aircraft design and manufacture, along with certification and testing in the Al Ain Region. This move is seen as creating a new global center of excellence to advance the UAE's vision for a knowledge-based, future-ready economy.

Dr. Abdulla Hamad AlGhfeli, Acting Director-General of Abu Dhabi Mobility, expressed that the agreement marks a strategic step towards enabling Abu Dhabi to strengthen its position as a hub for the certification, design, and manufacturing of advanced air mobility technologies. He added that through this collaboration, Abu Dhabi Mobility is working to build a comprehensive regulatory and operational ecosystem that supports the adoption and integration of these technologies across the emirate's transport network, contributing to greater innovation and improved mobility efficiency.

The initiative is part of the wider efforts under the Smart and Autonomous Vehicle Industries cluster, which unites global pioneers in next-generation transport to develop, test, and commercialize breakthrough technologies across land, sea, and air mobility and robotics.
