China Expands Auto Industry, Strengthens Global Ties in New Energy Vehicles

Haikou: A senior official from China's Ministry of Industry and Information Technology (MIIT) announced on Saturday that China will further open its automotive industry and enhance international cooperation, particularly focusing on the new energy vehicle (NEV) sector.

According to Emirates News Agency, Vice Minister Xiong Jijun emphasized China's commitment to advancing international collaboration in the NEV sector during the main session of the 2025 World New Energy Vehicle Congress (WNEVC). Xiong highlighted the necessity for cross-sector collaboration in developing new energy vehicles due to their reliance on multiple advanced technologies. He stressed the importance of pursuing globalization and creating a fair, non-discriminatory, and predictable market environment. Xiong also advocated for maintaining the stability of industrial and supply chains while promoting efficient resource flow.

Xiong pointed out that China has removed foreign ownership restrictions in the NEV sector, enabling companies like Tesla and Lexus to establish wholly foreign-owned enterprises in China. He also noted that global automotive giants such as Volkswagen, Mercedes-Benz, Toyota, and General Motors have deepened their collaborations with Chinese companies.

The WNEVC 2025 commenced in Haikou, located in south China's Hainan Province on Saturday. The three-day congress includes a variety of activities such as conferences, seminars, technology exhibitions, and technology evaluations.

Data from MIIT reveals that global new energy vehicle sales reached nearly 10 million units in the first half of the year, constituting 21.3 percent of total new car sales. This marks an increase of approximately 4 percentage points compared to the same period last year.
