Cleveland Clinic Abu Dhabi Pioneers UAE’s First Cryoneurolysis Procedure for Multiple Sclerosis Patients

Abu Dhabi:Cleveland Clinic Abu Dhabi has successfully performed the United Arab Emirates' first cryoneurolysis procedure, providing significant relief to a patient suffering from Multiple Sclerosis (MS) by reducing severe focal spasticity in the lower limbs. This innovative approach underscores the emirate's dedication to integrating the latest medical advancements to enhance patient care and expand treatment options for conditions associated with spasticity.

According to Emirates News Agency, spasticity is a prevalent neurological disorder affecting 30 to 50 percent of individuals with MS, as well as those recovering from strokes or brain and spinal cord injuries. It is characterized by muscle stiffness, involuntary tightness, and spasms, which can be debilitating and often requires additional treatment methods beyond conventional therapies such as physiotherapy and botulinum toxin injections.

In a landmark case, a 36-year-old patient named Ali Al Zaabi, who had been experiencing significant stiffness in his hands and legs, underwent the cryoneurolysis procedure at Cleveland Clinic Abu Dhabi's Neurological Institute. The minimally invasive procedure, led by Dr. Prince Thakkar, uses extreme cold to temporarily freeze peripheral nerve function, effectively reducing pain and muscle spasticity in targeted areas. The treatment provided immediate relief for Al Zaabi, significantly reducing muscle stiffness and enhancing his quality of life.

Dr. Thakkar noted that Al Zaabi had persistent stiffness and had not responded well to other treatments, making cryoneurolysis a necessary and innovative option. The procedure provides immediate and prolonged relief, lasting between 6 to 12 months, which is longer than traditional therapies. This precise technique offers rapid results for moderate to severe spasticity related to brain and spinal cord disorders such as MS.

Following the procedure, Al Zaabi experienced immediate improvement, reporting less tightness in his legs and enhanced mobility. He expressed that the treatment had noticeably improved his daily life, providing comfort and confidence in his rehabilitation journey. The procedure aligns with the objectives of the Guideline for Management of Multiple Sclerosis, developed by the Department of Health - Abu Dhabi in collaboration with the National Multiple Sclerosis Society, which aims to support early diagnosis and facilitate access to advanced therapies.

By expanding access to such innovative treatments, Cleveland Clinic Abu Dhabi's approach offers renewed hope and improved quality of life for patients dealing with complex neurological conditions.

This milestone further reinforces Cleveland Clinic Abu Dhabi's position as a regional leader in complex neurological care. Ranked the #1 hospital in the UAE for Neurology in Newsweek's World's Best Specialized Hospitals 2027 and designated Center of Excellence for stroke by the Department of Health - Abu Dhabi, the hospital continues to advance innovative treatment and therapies, including the novel application of cryoneurolysis in the management of spasticity.
