Hiroshima: The Emirates Polar Program recently participated in the 48th Antarctic Treaty Consultative Meeting (ATCM48) and the 28th meeting of the Committee for Environmental Protection (CEP28) in Hiroshima, Japan. This marks the program's second involvement in such meetings, highlighting the United Arab Emirates' increasing role in Antarctic governance and scientific endeavors.
According to Emirates News Agency, the UAE delegation attended as a non-consultative party. Their focus was on observing plenary discussions and contributing insights at the CEP forum, led by Chief Science Advisor Dr. Aisha Al Suwaidi. This participation underscores the UAE's commitment to international cooperation in Antarctic matters.
In collaboration with Bulgaria, the UAE co-submitted a working paper on a new sub-base unit. This initiative, spearheaded by the National Center of Meteorology through the Emirates Polar Program, exemplifies the practical application of international scientific collaboration under the Antarctic Treaty System. The treaty system itself is dedicated to promoting scientific cooperation and safeguarding Antarctica's unique environment.
The UAE's involvement in these meetings is a testament to its dedication to science diplomacy and responsible environmental stewardship. As the nation prepares for deeper engagement in the upcoming ATCM49, it continues to solidify its commitment to the principles of the Antarctic Treaty System.
