Emirates Successfully Retrofits First Two-Class A380 Aircraft

Dubai: Emirates has achieved a significant milestone in its extensive multi-billion dollar retrofit programme with the successful refurbishment of its first two-class A380 aircraft. The newly revamped aircraft, designated A6-EUX, has already commenced operations, flying between Dubai and Birmingham as EK 39/40. It now boasts refreshed interiors featuring Emirates' latest products across three cabin classes: 76 Business Class seats, 56 Premium Economy Seats, and 437 Economy Class seats.

According to Emirates News Agency, this retrofit marks the first of 15 two-class A380 aircraft that Emirates plans to renovate. This initiative is part of the airline's commitment to delivering a consistently superior customer experience. The retrofit programme, managed entirely in-house by Emirates Engineering in Dubai, has already completed work on 95 aircraft, including 42 Airbus A380s and 53 Boeing 777s, which accounts for over one-third of Emirates' current fleet.

Sir Tim Clark, President of Emirates Airline, emphasized that the retrofit programme is centered around providing an elevated travel experience. The engineering team worked diligently, collaborating with partners and suppliers to integrate top-tier products into each aircraft. The reconfiguration of the two-class A380 into a three-class layout, which includes the popular Premium Economy seating on the upper deck, showcases the team's extensive capabilities.

As part of the retrofit, Emirates introduced its award-winning Premium Economy cabin to the upper deck of the A380 for the first time. The cabin features spacious leather seats with a generous recline in a 2-3-2 configuration, complete with amenities like full leg and footrests, adjustable headrests, built-in charging ports, cocktail tables, and a 13.3-inch personal entertainment screen.

The retrofit involved taking apart the entire cabin interior of A6-EUX, refreshing it, and reassembling it with precision. The Emirates Engineering team executed extensive modifications, including removing 120 Economy Class seats to make room for the new Premium Economy and additional Business Class seating. Structural changes were also necessary, involving upgrades to galley modules, stowage areas, overhead bins, and other cabin features, along with changes to the aircraft's electrical and plumbing systems.

The first two-class A380 retrofit was completed over two months, requiring approximately 35,000 man-hours and over 2,500 different parts. Future retrofits are expected to be completed in 30 days, with all 15 two-class A380s set to be retrofitted by the end of 2026.

Emirates' ambitious retrofit programme was first announced in 2021, driven by a vision to uphold the airline's high standards of customer experience globally. Initially, 120 aircraft were slated for refurbishment, but the programme expanded to 191 aircraft by May 2024, and later to 219 aircraft, due to its success and positive customer feedback.

A dedicated team of around 270 staff ensures that, on average, two refreshed aircraft are completed every month. In an effort to minimize environmental impact, materials from the retrofitted aircraft are repurposed through Emirates' upcycling programme, resulting in initiatives like the 'Aircrafted' range of collector pieces and 'Aircrafted for Kids' backpacks. To date, around 4,000 backpacks have been donated to children in 10 countries.
