Dubai:Emirates Central Cooling Systems Corporation (Empower), the world's largest district cooling services provider, has achieved two new Guinness World Records for its Business Bay district cooling project. These records were attained in the field of thermal energy storage, with the company receiving the certificates during the 28th Water, Energy, Technology and Environment Exhibition (WETEX 2026), organized by Dubai Electricity and Water Authority (DEWA) at the Dubai World Trade Centre.
According to Wam, Empower's new records include 'The largest cumulative thermal energy storage tank capacity at a single district cooling facility' with a capacity of 94.65 MW (154,000 RTh) and 'The most thermal energy storage tanks in a single district cooling facility,' with six tanks for its Business Bay District Cooling system in Dubai. These achievements bring the total number of Guinness World Records held by the Business Bay project to four.
The Business Bay project had previously set records as the 'Highest Capacity District Cooling Plant' with a capacity of 293,862 refrigeration tons (RT) and the 'Largest Cooling Plant Coverage (Number of buildings),' serving 211 mixed-use buildings. The project is one of the world's largest district cooling projects, with an ultimate capacity of 451,540 RT, comprising nine district cooling plants and a pipeline network exceeding 53 kilometers.
Empower continues to expand the Business Bay project, having signed a contract in 2026 for the design of a fifth plant with a production capacity of up to 44,000 RT. Construction is set to begin in the fourth quarter as part of plans to meet growing demand for high-efficiency district cooling services in Dubai.
Ahmad Bin Shafar, CEO of Empower, stated that these achievements highlight the company's capability in deploying advanced technologies and enhancing operational efficiency. He emphasized the importance of thermal energy storage technologies in optimizing energy use and supporting sustainability efforts, reinforcing Dubai's status as a leader in sustainable development.
