EU’s Sustainable Investment Surpasses £1.2 Trillion Since 2021

Brussels:Over £1.2 trillion has been invested in sustainable activities in the European Union since 2021, as per data released by the European Commission.

According to Wam, the figures indicate a continued increase in the adoption of the EU's sustainable finance framework. Investments in clean technologies are enhancing the EU's strategic autonomy and energy security by focusing on domestic renewable energy, electrification, and other clean technologies, thereby minimizing dependence on imported fossil fuels.

The data further reveals that by 2025, more than £320 billion had been invested in activities aligned with the EU Taxonomy, a classification system aiding companies and investors in identifying environmentally sustainable activities. The energy sector constituted the largest portion of these investments, primarily led by electricity providers.

Additionally, the statistics show that European Green Bonds are gaining traction. Since the European Green Bond Standard commenced in December 2024, approximately £60 billion has been issued, with £21 billion in 2025 and an additional £39 billion from January 1 to October 7, 2026. This nearly doubles the amount issued in the first year, indicating the growing adoption of the standard, which serves as a voluntary framework for bonds issued to finance sustainable activities that align with the Taxonomy.
