New York:The UAE Parliamentary Division of the Federal National Council (FNC), led by Dr. Ali Rashid Al Nuaimi, participated in the Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU) Parliamentary Meeting held alongside the 81st session of the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA81).
According to Emirates News Agency, Dr. Tulia Ackson, President of the Inter-Parliamentary Union, highlighted in her opening remarks the significance of the Pact for the Future, adopted in September 2024. The pact emphasizes the importance of multilateral cooperation for peace and development, urging for increased parliamentary involvement in UN activities and the execution of its agreements, particularly concerning the Sustainable Development Goals.
Dr. Al Nuaimi underscored the necessity of enhancing parliamentary engagement in the United Nations' operations. He advocated for the inclusion of parliamentarians in official national delegations attending UN meetings, allowing them to contribute effectively to discussions on global issues and decision-making processes.
He urged the IPU to implement pragmatic measures encouraging governments to incorporate parliamentarians in national delegations and suggested this topic be addressed in upcoming IPU meetings. Dr. Al Nuaimi emphasized that enhancing parliamentary participation is a shared responsibility, requiring actions from both national parliaments and the IPU, not solely the United Nations.
Furthermore, Dr. Al Nuaimi pointed out the significant political, economic, and demographic shifts the world has experienced since the drafting of the United Nations Charter in 1945. He stressed that the international system must adapt to these changes to better serve humanity, uphold shared values and principles, and aid in creating a more promising future for all.
