Abu dhabi: H.H. Sheikh Hamdan bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Ruler's Representative in Al Dhafra Region and Chairman of the Environment Agency - Abu Dhabi (EAD), chaired the second Board of Directors' meeting of 2025. The meeting reviewed preparations for hosting the International Union for the Conservation of Nature (IUCN) World Conservation Congress in Abu Dhabi.
According to Emirates News Agency, H.H. Sheikh Hamdan commended EAD's efforts in integrating environmental values into the emirate's health, economy, and society. He emphasized the agency's role in preserving the environment and fostering a sustainable future for Abu Dhabi. The congress, under the patronage of President His Highness Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, is organized by IUCN and supported by the Ministry of Climate Change and Environment (MOCCAE). It marks the first time the event will be held in the Gulf region.
The UAE secured the hosting rights through a bid by MOCCAE and EAD on behalf of the government. The congress will feature 500 specialized sessions and is expected to attract approximately 10,000 participants from over 140 countries. This event underscores the UAE's commitment to environmental and climate action, aligning with its leadership's vision of sustainable development.
The meeting, held at Al Nakheel Palace, was attended by various dignitaries, including Sheikh Rashid bin Hamdan bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Mohammed Ahmed Al Bowardi, Vice Chairman of EAD's Board, and other key officials. The agency presented updates on its Strategy 2026-2030, focusing on climate change mitigation and efficient natural resource use, aiming to enhance Abu Dhabi's global environmental standing.
H.H. Sheikh Hamdan was informed about the successful outcomes of the Dalma aquaculture project, which uses artificial intelligence to produce local fish species. He also reviewed the progress of the Abu Dhabi Coral Gardens initiative, which aims to install 40,000 artificial reef modules by 2030 to boost marine biodiversity.
EAD also showcased its air quality prediction system, capable of forecasting pollution levels 72 hours in advance using advanced algorithms. Furthermore, a project to monitor unauthorised waste disposal sites in Al Ain Region was discussed, highlighting the agency's goal to reduce such incidents by 90 percent across the emirate by 2041.
