The Iraqi Government on Saturday acclaimed the Danish Government’s decision to bar desecration of the Quran or any other heavenly book or symbol.
Foreign Minister Fuad Hussein exchanged letters with his Danish counterpart, Lars Lokke Rasmussen,, lauded Copenhagen’s step for sake of preserving sanctity of the religious books.
The Iraqi Government respects freedom of expression, as enshrined in the Denmark Constitution, however such freedoms must not be exploited to provide the erroneous right for some to disdain the sanctities and the heavenly books that are revered by millions of Muslims and other nations worldwide, minister Hussein wrote to his Danish counterpart.
Targeting the sacred entities foments hatred, widens the gulf among nations, threatens co-existence and undermines relations among Muslim and European States, Hussein noted, hoping that the new legislation would be endorsed as soon as possible.
For his part, the Danish minister said such conducts do not represent the Danish people and that freedom of expression is the foundation of democracy.
Denmark and Sweden have recently witnessed recurring organized burning of copies of the Quran at public locations under the controversial camouflage of freedoms, triggering wide-scale popular wrath across the Muslim world.
The proposed law stipulates penalties against offenders, namely fines and maximum two years behind prison bars.
