Daejeon: The Korean government has committed to restoring the administrative computer network following a fire at the central state data centre caused by a battery explosion. The Ministry of the Interior and Safety convened a meeting of the Central Disaster and Safety Countermeasures Headquarters (CDSCH) to prioritize repairing the network equipment by Sunday, aiming to normalize key services essential to daily life and the economy.
According to Emirates News Agency, the fire broke out at the National Information Resources Service in Daejeon, prompting the government to shut down 647 online systems, including the mobile identification system and online postal service. Of these, 436 systems are public programs, while 211 are intranet systems used by government officials. A total of 96 systems were directly damaged by the fire.
The fire started at 8:15 p.m. on Friday due to a lithium-ion battery explosion in a computer room on the fifth floor of the centre. The explosion occurred as workers were disconnecting uninterruptible power supply batteries to relocate them to the basement. Authorities reported that the flames were fully extinguished by 6 p.m. Saturday, approximately 22 hours after the fire began.
