Kuwait city: Kuwait is placing significant emphasis on environmental sustainability as a pivotal and strategic element in its developmental agenda. This commitment is part of the country's plans and future programs, with the government intensifying efforts over the past two years to adopt sustainability strategies under the directives of His Highness the Emir Sheikh Meshal Al-Ahmad Al-Jaber Al-Sabah.
According to Emirates News Agency, the Cabinet has been instrumental in advancing the visions related to environmental sustainability. The Cabinet's discussions have frequently prioritized a national roadmap for low-carbon development. This roadmap was recently highlighted in a presentation by Minister of Oil Tariq Al-Roumi and officials from the Environment Public Authority (EPA), which aims to enhance resilience against climate change impacts.
The roadmap outlines strategies for achieving sustainable economic growth through innovative solutions in a circular carbon economy. It includes initiatives for environmental innovation and green investments across various sectors. Kuwait has also increased coordination with China to activate memoranda of understanding related to low-carbon systems, renewable energy, and environmental infrastructure.
Kuwait's commitment to environmental sustainability is further evidenced by its 2050 low-carbon plan, developed in collaboration with the UN Environment Programme. This plan underscores Kuwait's adherence to the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change and aims for carbon neutrality by 2060. The state is focused on diversifying energy revenue and enhancing renewable energy sources.
The first report on Kuwait's state of the environment, released last year by the EPA, marks significant progress in assessing and improving environmental conditions. The report, prepared with the UN, addresses key issues such as climate change, waste management, and biodiversity.
The EPA has also launched strategic projects to preserve the environment and promote sustainable development, including national strategies for waste management and combating desertification. These projects are part of Kuwait's efforts to enhance public-private partnerships and improve performance indicators in environmental preservation.
Kuwait's Fourth Structural Plan, known as the 2040 Master Plan, supports sustainable urban development through green building initiatives. Additionally, the environment preservation act includes policies to protect natural resources and prevent pollution.
During a recent Sustainable Energy Conference, Minister of Electricity, Water and Renewable Energy Sabeeh Al-Mukhaizeen reiterated Kuwait's commitment to achieving a balanced energy mix, with plans to source 50 percent of its electrical power from renewable energy by 2025. The Shagaya Renewable Energy Park is a key component of Kuwait's renewable energy projects.
The Public Authority of Agriculture Affairs and Fish Resources is working on expanding green cover and enhancing agricultural practices to address environmental challenges. Tree planting campaigns and the development of public parks are also part of this initiative.
Kuwait remains committed to regional and international environmental resolutions and collaborates with international organizations to advance its sustainability goals. UN Environment Programme's Regional Director for West Asia, Sami Dimassi, highlighted Kuwait's progress in environmental action, while UN Representative Ghada Al-Taher praised the country's active role in addressing environmental challenges.
Kuwait's participation in global climate summits and initiatives like the Middle East Green Initiative Summit demonstrates its commitment to regional collaboration in combating climate change.
