Cairo: The United Arab Emirates participated in the 38th meeting of the Arab Experts Group on Counterterrorism, which took place at the General Secretariat of the League of Arab States. The meeting gathered representatives from justice, interior, and foreign ministries, as well as counterterrorism authorities from various Arab nations, in addition to the General Secretariat of the Council of Arab Interior Ministers.
According to Emirates News Agency, during the meeting, the UAE delegation presented a working paper outlining the legislative framework governing virtual currencies in the UAE and the potential risks of their exploitation by terrorist organizations. The presentation aimed to highlight the regulatory measures the UAE has put in place to prevent misuse of virtual currencies in financing illicit activities.
Minister Plenipotentiary Dr. Maha Bakhit, who is the Supervisor of the Legal Affairs Sector, Director of the Legal Affairs Department, and head of the technical secretariat of the Arab Experts Group on Counterterrorism, stated that the meeting reviewed follow-up measures to implement recommendations from the 37th meeting held in Tunisia last August.
The discussions also emphasized the importance of strengthening cooperation with the United Nations and its relevant entities. The agenda included addressing the misuse of modern technologies by terrorist groups, such as cryptocurrencies, drones, and digital applications, in funding and executing terrorist operations. Additionally, efforts to enhance and develop the work of the experts group were also discussed comprehensively.
