New york: The UN Security Council has underscored the necessity of upholding international law, particularly in ensuring maritime security and the freedom of navigation in crucial waterways, citing these as vital to global economic stability and energy security.
According to Emirates News Agency, the emphasis was articulated in a presidential statement following a meeting focused on the collaboration between the United Nations and the League of Arab States. This discussion comes amid warnings of escalating regional tensions. The Council advocates for enhanced international and regional efforts to bolster multilateral dialogue and to advance political solutions aimed at achieving enduring peace.
Additionally, the statement stressed the importance of reinforcing coordination between the UN and the Arab League to tackle increasing security challenges in the region and to improve responses to regional crises. The Council highlighted the alignment of objectives between the two organizations, particularly in supporting political resolutions to conflicts, and described their cooperation as pivotal for maintaining international peace and security.
The Council called for joint endeavors in conflict prevention, peacebuilding, and post-conflict recovery, which includes providing technical and financial support. It renewed its appeals for de-escalation in conflict zones, the protection of civilians and infrastructure, and unimpeded humanitarian access. Furthermore, the Council emphasized the importance of implementing the Gaza conflict resolution plan adopted on 29th September 2025.
The Council welcomed ongoing institutional coordination between the UN and the Arab League, including regular meetings, and noted a forthcoming meeting scheduled in Geneva in July 2026 aimed at further strengthening their cooperation. It also acknowledged the contributions of Arab states in peacekeeping operations and the role of the UN liaison office to the League in Cairo, especially in supporting women and youth in peace initiatives.
