Abu dhabi: Youth 4 Sustainability (Y4S), Masdar's initiative empowering future sustainability leaders, has introduced Beyond Borders, an international programme designed to extend sustainability education beyond traditional settings for tangible global impact. The inaugural session convened 10 young innovators in Malaysia for five days of immersive workshops, field engagement, and digital storytelling.
According to Emirates News Agency, the programme gave Y4S Future Sustainability Leaders hands-on experience while promoting cross-cultural understanding and leadership skills. Participants addressed real-world energy challenges and developed case studies that intertwined people, policy, and technology. Zainab Al Ali, Director of Outreach and Stakeholder Relations in Masdar, highlighted that Beyond Borders Malaysia set a new standard for Y4S in delivering large-scale impact and preparing youth to influence policy, drive innovation, and lead global energy transformation.
The youth, hailing from the UAE, Malaysia, Germany, Egypt, Algeria, Yemen, and India, interacted with Malaysia's primary energy stakeholders to understand the country's energy transition. They visited Tenaga Nasional Berhad, Malaysia's leading utility company, to learn about the national power infrastructure and renewable energy strategies. At Universiti Tenaga Nasional, they engaged in workshops on inclusive energy systems, exploring solutions that align local issues with global sustainability objectives through design challenges, case studies, and innovation labs.
The programme culminated in a youth showcase where participants presented group outcomes and proposed local energy solutions, demonstrating practical ideas and affirming youth as pivotal in long-term positive energy transformation. Narmeen Almarzooqi, a Future Sustainability Leader, shared that experiencing Malaysia's energy landscape through site visits, community engagement, and storytelling strengthened her commitment to sustainability, showing how experiential learning and cross-cultural collaboration empower youth in global energy transformation.
Beyond Borders Malaysia's impact extends past the programme, as participants plan to apply their knowledge to projects in their countries, utilize new networks, and advance innovation. For Y4S, the programme enhances partnerships with academic and industry stakeholders in Southeast Asia and provides a scalable model for future editions in other regions. Y4S participants included a diverse group blending technical expertise, policy insight, and storytelling to champion a regionally relevant energy transformation.
