TORQUAY AND CURZON EARN HARD-FOUGHT REPLAYS ON EMIRATES FA CUP FIRST ROUND SUNDAY

Will Goodwin’s dramatic late leveller earned National League Torquay United a first round replay with League One Derby County on a super Sunday of Emirates FA Cup action.

Goodwin struck in the 95th minute after William Osula’s double had looked to haul Paul Warne’s ten-man Rams into the second round.

But Asa Hall’s penalty threw the hosts a lifeline at the start of the second period after Eiran Cashin was sent off for fouling Goodwin in the box.

And it was that man Goodwin who intervened once again late on as he diverted home Aaron Jarvis’ effort to trigger wild scenes at Plainmoor and secure his side an eagerly-anticipated replay at Pride Park.

Courageous Curzon Ashton also battled to a gutsy draw as they earned a replay at League One Cambridge United.

The National League North side held Mark Bonner’s visitors to an entertaining stalemate in Manchester as Cambridge, who sit over 50 places over their non-league opponents in the English football pyramid, were unable to grab a winner.

Paul Digby, Lewis Simper and Harvey Knibbs all went close for the Us but home goalkeeper Chris Renshaw stood firm to secure his side a memorable day out at the Abbey.

And the sixth-tier hosts almost snatched it at the death as Cambridge shot-stopper Will Mannion had to thwart Jordan Richards’ dangerous free-kick.

Wrexham safely navigated their way through to the second round with a comfortable 3-0 win over Oldham Athletic.

The Welsh side, owned by the famous American actors Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney, netted twice in the first half as Sam Dalby and Paul Mullin both grabbed the goals.

And striker Mullin hit his second just after the hour mark to fire Phil Parkinson’s side to victory at the Racecourse.

Elsewhere, National League Woking’s clash with League One Oxford United was postponed owing to a waterlogged pitch at the Laithwaite Community Stadium, with a new date for the fixture yet to be confirmed.

And League One Ipswich Town, who won the competition in 1978 and currently sit second in the third-tier, travel to Isthmian League Bracknell Town in front of the national television cameras on Monday evening to round off an action-packed first round proper weekend.

SOUTHAMPTON AND LIONESSES KEEP PACE WITH BRISTOL CITY

It was a tale of two hat-tricks in the Barclays FA Women’s Championship as Southampton and London City Lionesses kept pace with league leaders Bristol City.

Katie Wilkinson delivered the goods for Southampton during the week before Shanade Hopcroft followed suit for the Lionesses on Saturday as both sides moved to 17 points, two short of City.

The table-toppers had their game at Lewes postponed owing to rain, while Crystal Palace’s match with Sheffield United also suffered the same fate.

Elsewhere, there were wins for Blackburn and Charlton, who both look well-placed in the top half of the table.

Wilkinson masterclass sees Southampton keep pace with leaders

The matchday nine action began in midweek, when Southampton entertained Coventry United on Wednesday evening.

Wilkinson’s first-half hat-trick was the difference between the two sides, and the forward’s first goal for the club came after just 27 seconds at St Mary’s.

Her first was a brilliant half-volley from just outside the box which flew into the bottom corner as Saints made the perfect start under the lights.

Ella Pusey then set up Wilkinson for her second on 38 minutes, before the game was soon beyond the visitors when full-back Megan Collett swung in a brilliant cross that allowed Wilkinson to tap home.

Charlton edge out Durham to move fourth

Melissa Johnson was the matchwinner at Maiden Castle as Charlton beat Durham 2-1 to secure a first win since September.

The Addicks took the lead after just six minutes when Emily Simpkins tucked away a penalty.

The hosts were awarded a spot-kick of their own a short while later, and it was no surprise to see Beth Hepple assume responsibility and bring her side level.

Summer signing Simpkins was at the heart of all that was all good about Charlton’s play and was involved in the goal which proved to be decisive.

She won the ball back in midfield and slipped in Johnson whose strike found the net via the post.

Hopcroft’s hat-trick helps Lionesses beat Birmingham

Hopcroft’s hat-trick helped London City Lionesses stretch their unbeaten run to seven matches after they overcame Birmingham City 3-2 at Princes Park.

Hopcroft added to her two first-half strikes with a penalty as the Lionesses responded well to Louise Quinn’s 31st minute equaliser.

And Quinn was on the scoresheet once again at the death with a stoppage-time consolation.

Leek’s late strike maintains Rovers’ fine run

Blackburn made it four games without defeat after Ellie Leek scored an 83rd minute winner in their 1-0 win over Sunderland.

Rovers had been knocking on the door for much of the second half and finally found the breakthrough in the closing stages of the game when Leek lifted the ball over the onrushing Claudia Moan.

The first real chance of the game fell the visitors’ way when Libby McInnes was played through, but her shot was well smothered by Blackburn’s Shanell Salgado.

Blackburn improved after the interval and came close on a couple of occasions through Saffron Jordan.

But Leek finally broke the deadlock with a deft finish from inside the box, a goal which earned Blackburn back-to-back home wins.

A JOINT STATEMENT FROM MEMBERS OF THE UEFA WORKING GROUP ON HUMAN AND LABOUR RIGHTS

With the FIFA World Cup Qatar beginning shortly, we would like to react to the latest developments and public discussions related to challenges in the host country off the pitch before the sport shall soon take centre stage.

We acknowledge, and welcome, as we have done in the past, that significant progress has been made by Qatar, particularly with regards to the rights of migrant workers, with the impact of legislative changes demonstrated in the International Labour Organisation’s recent reports.

We welcome the assurances given by the Qatari Government and by FIFA regarding the safety, security and inclusion of all fans who travel to the World Cup, including LGBTQ+ fans.

We also recognise that every country has issues and challenges and we agree with FIFA that diversity is a strength.

However, embracing diversity and tolerance also means supporting human rights. Human rights are universal and they apply everywhere.

We will continue to support the momentum for positive, progressive change and continue to advocate for a conclusive outcome and update on the two key outstanding issues we have been discussing with FIFA for a long time.

FIFA has repeatedly committed to deliver concrete answers on these issues – the compensation fund for migrant workers, and the concept of a migrant workers centre to be created in Doha – and we will continue to press for these to be delivered.

We believe in the power of football to make further positive and credible contributions to progressive sustainable change in the world.
