CHESTERFIELD THE TOAST OF NON-LEAGUE AFTER EMIRATES FA CUP SHOCK WIN

Chesterfield were the toast of non-league after the National League side knocked out AFC Wimbledon 2-0 to reach the Emirates FA Cup Third Round for the second year in a row.

Goals in each half from Armando Dobra and Jeff King at Plough Lane stunned their League Two hosts and set up another potentially lucrative tie after the Spireites drew Chelsea at this stage last season.

The visitors took an unexpected lead a minute before half time thanks to Dobra’s cool finish and King made sure of Chesterfield’s safe passage after his cross fortuitously looped into the top corner with 14 minutes remaining.

National League rivals Wrexham also booked their spot in the Third Round with star striker Paul Mullin bagging a second-half hat-trick in a 4-1 win over National League South Farnborough.

A goalless first 45 minutes gave way to a goal fest in the second, with Mullin’s opener cancelled out by Oliver Pendlebury’s superb free kick.

A replay looked to be on the cards until Elliot Lee slammed home from 20 yards with 12 minutes to go and Mullin wrapped up the win with two late strikes.

But the lowest team left in the competition won’t be joining the Red Dragons in the next round after Forest Green Rovers survived a late onslaught at home to Alvechurch.

Jediah Yeboah Abbey levelled for the visitors after Connor Wickham gave Forest Green the lead from the spot.

Josh March hit back immediately for Ian Burchnall’s side who had to cling on for a 2-1 victory with Dom Bernard given his marching orders with 18 minutes remaining for a second bookable offence.

In Saturday’s late kick off, National League Dagenham & Redbridge were moments away from a famous win at home to Gillingham of the league above.

Josh Walker netted 10 minutes from time to put the hosts ahead but Scott Kashket popped up in the 92nd minute to send the tie to a replay.

League Two Grimsby overcame higher-league Cambridge United in a breathless 2-1 away win courtesy of a brace from Otis Khan, including a 90th minute breakaway winner.

And there was late drama in south London, where Myles Hippolyte rose highest in the seventh minute of injury time to rescue a 2-2 draw for Stockport County against Charlton Athletic.

In an all-League One clash, Shrewsbury Town put Peterborough United to the sword with a 3-1 win to send the Shrews into the Third Round for a sixth successive season.

In the other two third-tier matchups, Portsmouth held on to record a 3-2 victory over MK Dons, while Oxford United comfortably eased past Exeter City 4-1.

Non-league King’s Lynn Town’s bid to reach the FA Cup Third Round for the first time in the club’s history was swiftly ended after five second-half minutes in a 3-0 home loss to Stevenage.

Sheffield Wednesday also survived a scare against League Two Mansfield, needing two late quickfire goals from substitute Michael Smith to render George Lapslie’s first-half effort irrelevant.

Walsall are in the hat for the Third Round by the skin of their teeth after substitutes Andy Williams and Douglas James-Taylor struck twice after the 88th minute to beat Carlisle United 2-1.

Elsewhere, League One rivals Accrington Stanley and Barnsley made no mistake at home to non-league Barnet and League Two Crewe Alexandra respectively.

There was also a comfortable home win for Hartlepool United over Harrogate Town after Joe Mattock’s red card consigned the visitors to a 3-1 defeat.

CELEBRATIONS MARK END OF INCREDIBLE WORLD TRIATHLON CHAMPIONSHIP FINALS 2022 IN ABU DHABI

The World Triathlon Championship Finals 2022 presented by Daman have come to a close in Abu Dhabi after four days of scintillating competition and activities, further enhancing the UAE capital’s place as a global sporting event leader.

More than 80 international federations were represented at the Finals, hosted in Abu Dhabi for the first time, with the stunning backdrop of Yas Waterfront on Yas Island – a global hub for major sporting competition.

This was the culmination of the 2022 World Triathlon Series season, as world champions were crowned across elite, elite U23, para, and age group categories – with jubilant crowds on hand to cheer them home in a festival-like atmosphere. In addition, community and junior races hosted athletes of all ages and abilities giving athletes the chance to race on the same course and the same weekend as the world’s best.

His Excellency Aref Al Awani, General Secretary of Abu Dhabi Sports Council said: “Abu Dhabi has a long history with the sport of triathlon, but to host the World Triathlon Championship Finals for the first time has been an incredible honour. We thank everyone who has made this possible including event organisers, athletes, fans, sponsors, World Triathlon for putting their trust in Abu Dhabi to host this end-of-season showpiece, and Yas Island which has once again shown what a world-class sporting venue this is.

“The level of competition across all categories has been incredible. We have been inspired by all the athletes who took part and provided an excellent spectacle, but we must offer a special congratulations to the winners.’’

Marisol Casado, President of World Triathlon, and IOC board member said: “This has been the perfect end to a wonderful World Triathlon Series season. The competition was fiercely contested, and all the athletes showed us what triathlon is all about – amazing levels of fitness, determination, and heart – but also a wonderful sense of community and inclusion. To see so many taking part in community, age group, para, and elite competition shows the inclusivity of this sport, and we take huge pride in seeing participation growing year after year.

“An event of this size and importance is a huge undertaking to host and we offer our thanks to Abu Dhabi Sports Council for once again showcasing why Abu Dhabi is one of the world’s most

iconic sporting venues. We are also grateful to UAE Triathlon for their phenomenal support in making this a week to remember.”

Stuart Leatherby, Chief Commercial Business Officer, Daman said: ‘‘Once again we are delighted for Daman to be a sponsor for the World Triathlon Championship Finals. This has been a very special event as it has brough both elite and community athletes together in a huge celebration of sport and wellbeing

“Triathlon is a very accessible sport, whether swimming, cycling, or running and it was particularly inspiring to see all the community athletes taking part this week. We can’t all be elite competitors but through sports, like triathlon, we can all get a little more active, improve our health, happiness and overall wellbeing – and that’s a message we have seen loud and clear during this fantastic week.’’

In the elite races, an almost unparalleled field has been assembled featuring the world’s top ten athletes in both men’s and women’s categories along with a host of Olympic, World, Commonwealth and European champions.

After three-days of sporting excellence, Saturday afternoon concluded with the world’s best triathletes battling it out in an exhilarating showdown, which saw French Olympic athlete, Léo Bergere take home gold in the men’s elite race. Swiftly behind Bergere was USA’s Morgan Pearson, and Jelle Greens from Belgium proudly claimed bronze.

In the women’s elite event on Friday Flora Duffy won an action-packed race to become the woman to win four World Triathlon titles, while her biggest rival for this year’s crown Georgia Taylor-Brown had to settle for silver in Abu Dhabi and second in the overall season standings.

Triathlon is one of the most inclusive sports on the planet and that has been showcased over the last three days with age group, para, and community events running alongside the elite competition.

History was made on Saturday morning with the first-ever Para Triathlon Mixed Relay – with Team Australia II taking the honour of becoming the first to cross the finish line.

On Thursday twelve titles were awarded across the World Triathlon Para Championships with some awe-inspiring displays in the wheelchair and visually impaired classes. Cheered on by vociferous support the athletes put on an incredible display under the warmth of the Abu Dhabi sun.

In the PTWC category Lauren Parker was once more the star of the women’s wheelchair race and the men’s race witnessed another masterclass from Netherlands’ Jetze Plat, as he added yet another season to his remarkable winning streak. It was Spain’s Susana Rodriguez who delivered yet another untouchable winning performance in the PTVI race category, and the men’s race saw Great Britain’s Dave Ellis run his away to the gold, successful defending his world title.

Jules Ribstein of France and the USA’s Hailey Danz shone in the PTS2 category, while in the PTS3, it was Spain’s Daniel Molina and Elise Marc of France who took the honours.

Andrea Miguelez Ranz moved up from PTS3 to PTS4 to claim another world title, while Alexis Hanquinquant of France earned a fifth world title in the Abu Dhabi. In the PTS5 category, there were wins for Canadian Stefan Daniel and America’s Grace Norman who shrugged off illness to take gold.

In the under-23 categories, it was double delight for Great Britain as Conor Bentley and Kate Waugh won the men’s and women’s races respectively to take not only gold in Abu Dhabi but the overall world titles.

It was not only world titles on the line this week, however. Hundreds of local athletes took part in community and kid’s races – showing not only the inclusivity of the event but the growing strength of triathlon participation levels in the UAE.

Regional Triathlon Federations share thoughts on the World Triathlon Championship Finals in Abu Dhabi, presented by Daman.

Rashid Issa Al-Kandari, President of the Kuwait Triathlon Federation said: “Since the beginning of this year, the Kuwait Triathlon Federation has been keen to provide all the necessary support so our triathletes can participate in the World Triathlon Championship Finals in Abu Dhabi. This year marks our second official participation.

“We would also like to extend our thanks to the Sports Authority in the State of Kuwait for its unlimited support and of course to the United Arab Emirates and the Abu Dhabi Sports Council. The tournament was organised superbly, and the atmosphere on-ground was the perfect support and motivation for all athletes.

Ali Maqbool, President of the KSA Triathlon Federation, said: “This was our first participation in a world triathlon championship, and we participated in the U23 Super Sprint races. This was no doubt a strong and important start for us, and we hope that this experience will enable us to gain the necessary experience to compete again and hopefully take first positions in future editions of the championships.

Abu Dhabi has proven itself to be a distinguished and world-class organization to host global sporting events and what makes this edition so special is the choice of Yas Bay as the competition track. The location gave a boost of enthusiasm to all participating athletes.’

Abdullah Abdul Salam, President of the Bahraini Triathlon Federation, and Vice President of the West Asian Triathlon Federation said: “We are proud that one of the Arab Gulf countries hosted the World Triathlon Championship Finals. This only re-confirms the great role the Gulf

Cooperation Council plays in organising such important, global sporting events. This year marked our third participation in a world triathlon championship final, which is a great achievement for the Kingdom of Bahrain. We are making every effort to participate in all categories within the championships.’’

Region’s first stem cell transplant for MS patient performed in Abu Dhabi

ABU DHABI, Doctors at Abu Dhabi Stem Cells Center (ADSCC), part of PureHealth Group, have performed the region’s first successful bone marrow transplant on a patient suffering from Multiple Sclerosis (MS), highlighting Abu Dhabi’s growing position as a healthcare centre of excellence and a life sciences hub

The significant achievement in bone marrow transplantation, performed under the Abu Dhabi Bone Marrow Transplant (AD-BMT) programme, demonstrates a major advance in cell therapy and regenerative medicine capabilities to treat a range of diseases, including cancer and immune disorders.

Doctors at ADSCC performed the region’s first autologous hematopoietic stem cell transplantation (AHSCT) on a patient with MS earlier this month and the patient has since reported an improvement in her overall condition. The treatment, developed by the ADSCC, aims to ‘reset’ a person’s immune system and can be used for those with relapsing forms of MS.

The transplant success follows ADSCC’s ground-breaking work supporting Covid-19 patients during the pandemic, for which the centre was commended by Dr Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, Director-General of the World Health Organization (WHO), for its cutting-edge Covid-19 treatments. These included UAECell19, which ADSCC launched in 2020 and was used to treat thousands of Covid-19 patients, helping to regenerate lung capacity through stem cell therapy.

Established in 2020, ADSCC’s Abu Dhabi Bone Marrow Transplant (AD-BMT) programme was designed as a comprehensive program to provide autologous and allogeneic HSCT for adults and children as well as implementing different forms of cell therapies such as adoptive cell transfer. The AD-BMT program team at ADSCC, in collaboration with the neurology team at the centre, carried out the treatment on the MS patient, led by Dr Fatima Al Kaabi, AD-BMT Program Director.

Commenting on the landmark treatment, Dr Fatima Al Kaabi, Director of the AD-BMT Program, said: “At ADSCC, we are committed to ensuring the AD-BMT program meets the highest standards of quality and patient satisfaction at all steps of the process, including treatment, aftercare, and follow-up. With this new treatment, we have scaled our world-class capabilities, which represents hope and aims to improve the quality of life for everyone.”

Dr Yendry Ventura, CEO of ADSCC, said: “We are extremely proud of our achievement at the Abu Dhabi Stem Cells Center to become the first centre in the region to perform the BMT on a MS patient. It fills us with great pride to make such a life-saving treatment here in Abu Dhabi. We are thankful to the vision of the UAE’s wise leadership and the support of PureHealth management in making this possible.”

According to Shaista Asif, Group Chief Operating Officer of PureHealth Group: “The launch of the revolutionary bone marrow transplantation on a MS patient right here in the UAE could not have come at a more opportune time, as we mark five decades of progress across all fields in the UAE. Under the wise and visionary leadership of the UAE, PureHealth and its subsidiaries are committed to raising the benchmarks in healthcare excellence to drive efficiencies across the healthcare value chain. This is a major step forward in improving the average health spans in the country in line with our commitment to science of longevity.”

The AHSCT procedure carried out by ADSCC is a ‘standard of care’ and not just a ‘clinical option’ under the updated European Group for Blood & Marrow Transplantation (EBMT) and American Society for Blood and Marrow Transplantation (ASBMT) guidelines from 2019, which reviewed the clinical evidence of AHSCT on MS patients. It is a recognised and effective treatment for highly active Relapsing Remitting Multiple Sclerosis (RRMS), which has failed at least one disease modifying treatment. The EBMT fosters excellence in science to further improve the outcomes of Stem Cell Transplantation while the ASBMT is dedicated to advancing the science and clinical care for patients requiring blood and marrow transplants.

ADSCC continues to provide advanced treatment like extracorporeal photopheresis treatment in the UAE and is the only centre with two open clinical trials under PureHealth Group. To date, 13 cancer patients and one MS patient have been treated by ADSCC under the AD-BMT program.

The ADSCC is a highly specialised healthcare centre focused on cell therapy and regenerative medicine techniques. ADSCC was founded in March 2019 to meet growing domestic and regional demand for highly specialised medical services and treatments. The Center primarily focuses on processing, characterising, and storing cell products for clinical applications such as regenerative medicine, hematopoietic stem cell transplantation and cell therapy.
